When Helene Nunez and her brothers were young and would argue about something, her grandmother would herd them out to the porch, hand each one of them a pencil and say, “Now, break your pencil.” Then she would take the broken pencils, wrap them up in a bunch, and say, “Now try and break these.” Alone, one pencil would snap in half easily, but together the pencils could not be broken—just like a family’s love and support for each other. This was a lesson that taught Helene the importance of family and, most importantly, that strong ties cannot be broken.
So when you ask Helene where she gets her optimistic outlook on life, she’ll immediately tell you that it comes from always having a tight bond with her family.
